Advise TX, a member of the National College Advising Corps, could easily be likened to the “Teach for America” of college advising. The program recruits highly talented recent college graduates and places them as advisors in high-risk Texas high schools. Advise TX advisors have a singular mission – to build a college-going culture and help students find the best fit for their career aspirations.
Texas launched Advise TX in 2010 with a pilot of 15 advisors. In 2015-16, a total of 227,150 students were enrolled in the 113 high schools served by Advise TX. A recent study of Advise TX found that, in comparison to control high schools, students served by a member of the College Advising Corps are 42% more likely to apply to a postsecondary institution and 67% more likely to be accepted to a college or university.
